Morocco was formerly a French Protectorate, and has been independent since 1956. For more than 1,200 years, the country has been the western bastion of Islam, which characterises not only daily life, but also the culture of the country. At the Straits of Gibraltar, Morocco is the meeting point between Africa and Europe, the Atlantic and Mediterranean, Islam and Christendom, a world of bustling modern business and testaments to history. After a total of three years and a journey of 6,000 km through the very different landscapes of Morocco, Ernst Steiner now presents the result of his photographic odyssey in our Travel Library series. Starting from Marrakesh, the route led first to Essaouira on the Atlantic and then followed the coast to Agadir. Along the High Atlas, through luxuriant palm groves in the Dades Valley, on through the imposing Todras Gorge and barren stony deserts down to the dunes of Zagora and Merzouga, north across the Central Atlas to Fes and Meknes, via the blue city of Chefchaouen, up to Tangier, to return to Marrakesh and complete the circle via Rabat and Casablanca. Ernst Steiner always had his eye out for motifs which were particularly suitable for the panorama format. The Moroccan adobe architecture, the magnificent tile decoration of the palaces and riads allow the observer to immerse himself in the oriental way of life.
